Mom Thoughts
I would agree with the age recommendations. This series is heavy on illustrations to tell the story but also has a good vocabulary for the reader. I enjoy the illustration style and the main character is funny, confident, and loyal. She is a good friend that forgives when wronged, and I appreciate the language used. It is not sassy or disconcerting. There are strong themes of friendship, loyalty, trust, betrayal, and forgiveness that run through the whole series. I felt comfortable handing this to my child after reading it. It was a fun adventure.
Language: “I hate you” and “you’re supposed to kill her”
Questionable Behavior: In Zita the Spacegirl human sacrifice is mentioned by the bad guys. Legends of Zita has a midriff-baring outfit on the female adult companion. The Return of Zita has a friendly talking skeleton and also mentions “being sold to slavery” by aliens.
Sexual Content: In The Return of Zita, two adult companions who have been helping Zita, kiss each other.
Other Things to Know: There is definitely violence against the main character who is a young girl though there is never any injury, inappropriate, or extremely scary situations.
