Summary
This graphic novel is a fictionalization of a young Emily Dickinson. It introduces her four close friends, her dog, and her family. Most of the book is following Emily and Carlo (her dog) on a day where they explore the field and forest by Emily’s house looking for wildflowers. Some of Emily’s poems or partial poems are interspersed.

Mom Thoughts
This lovely graphic novel is a beautiful little treasure. Coming from someone who struggles to truly enjoy graphic novels, that should speak volumes! The illustrations are simply enchanting and it’s obvious the author/illustrator has a great love of flowers and Emily Dickinson. Many pages in the book take on the look of Emily’s herbarium. It’s a quick read, but if you have a child that loves Emily Dickinson or poetry, or a child that struggles to enjoy poetry, getting to know the poet behind the words could be a helpful introduction. There is one line where Emily says she believes her dog will be the first person to meet her in heaven, just as an FYI. I am thrilled to have found a secular graphic novel I can recommend wholeheartedly!
