Summary
This Thanksgiving-themed picture book recounts the Pilgrims leaving England because of religious persecution and risking everything to come to America, their voyage, and the first year of their settlement. While historical in nature, this book also clearly has Christian themes.
Mom Thoughts
This more unique Thanksgiving picture book had all three of my children captivated. It was brief but very informative. I do love the author’s intent to make sure children understand the deep devotion the Pilgrims had to God and that was their driving factor for risking their lives and starting over in America.
The illustrations are not my favorite but do keep things from getting to heavy. There is one page that depicts the birth of Jesus in a stable with the Wise Men approaching. I love that the author calls Jesus the King of Kings, but he forgets to capitalize this title.
Also, there is a line that reads, “The Mayflower Compact showed that people could live together in peace without a king. They could be free if they realized God was in charge and lived for Him.” While I agree with this statement, some might argue that it comes off as slightly pro-anarchy.
Overall, I do enjoy this book and think it could be an informational and helpful Thanksgiving resource.
