Summary
These books open with a note to parents about why these books are so important for children growing up in the 21st century when gender ideology has exploded. They are written by Joe Owen and his daughter Abby Owen, who are both a part of the Latin American ministry of Answers in Genesis. Not only do these books counter the onslaught of gender ideology being presented to children, but they also teach how God is glorified through being made either a girl or a boy.
Both books then walk children through the six-day creation story from Genesis. Particular attention is given to the creation of the first man and woman and what it means to be made in the image of God. Then the different roles and responsibilities given to Adam and Eve by God are also discussed. Adam is to be a leader and guide, while Eve is a helper and nurturer. The message is explained clearly and repeated, that even though each gender has differences, one is not more important or better than the other.
The girl’s book goes on to discuss God creating women to have children, although not every girl will grow up to be a mom. Nurturing and caring for children, teammates, siblings, and other parts of creation is identified as a way to use being made female to glorify God.
The boy’s book describes God creating males to have the roles of providing for, protecting, and leading families. The New Testament is also referenced in its’ teaching about the important leadership roles of men in both the home and church. Boys are called to provide, protect, and teach, even if they are not fathers one day. Boys can bring God glory by watching out for friends or writing poetry, like the Psalms.
Both books show examples of how men and women dress differently throughout the world and Deuteronomy 22:5 is referenced. Even though some clothing options, like t-shirts, are common to both girls and boys, the distinction is made that trying to look like the opposite gender on purpose is showing a heart attitude that rejects God’s design and who God created you to be.
The books end with the message of salvation through Jesus Christ being presented. God always has a plan, from creation through the crucifixion, and one day the children of God will enjoy the new heaven and earth with Jesus forever. God doesn’t make mistakes.
Mom Thoughts
These books are wonderful resources for families wanting to root their children in the biblical truth of how they were made by God, either male or female. The illustrations are kid-friendly and differ depending on which book you are reading. The text flows well for easy reading, and important concepts are large and bold. They would be a perfect read-aloud choice for younger children, while those reading early chapter books would be able to independently enjoy these titles.
