Summary

This family devotional has 40 days of readings that include a Key Verse, the author’s thoughts, Reflection Questions, and Bible References. It takes about 10 minutes for each devotional, depending on how much time you spend answering questions.

Mom Thoughts

While this devotional is perfectly designed to use in the 40 days leading up to Easter, it can truly be used any time of the year. I love how each day illustrates who Jesus is: The Serpent Crusher, The Ark and the Door, The Lamb God Has Provided, The Tabernacle, The Mercy Seat, etc. Overall, I would say the theology leans toward Reformed, and I personally feel very comfortable recommending this to any family. It will help your children see Christ as a fulfillment of many Old Testament symbols as well as the only one who could be our Savior and our only way to God.

A couple of things to be aware of:
-When speaking of Noah’s rainbow, she tells you to think about a hunting bow as well and asks, “What do you think God is saying here?” I disagree with this correlation and because of that, I don’t necessarily love the phrasing of the question.

-A very small thing: when speaking of Joseph’s brothers, it says they told Jacob “Joseph was killed by a wild animal.” Genesis says that they brought Joseph’s coat to Jacob after dipping it in goat’s blood and said, “This we have found; please identify whether it is your son’s robe or not.” Jacob comes to the killed by an animal conclusion on his own.

-While the eschatological thoughts are very minimal, there are two instances that you may want to know about. In reference to Jesus being lifted up into heaven, “They were filled with joy! Why? Because Jesus went to heaven! In a cloud! Just like the Song of Man in Daniel! He was on his throne that very minute! His rule was starting now!” Also, the last sentence on the same day reads, “He has been exalted, and the kingdom of God is here!”

Overall, I think this is a fantastic resource for families, not to replace their Bible reading time, but to be a supplement for it.
