Appealing to children who enjoy stories of kings, kingdoms, princes, and princesses, this picture book recounts the story of redemption. It starts at the garden, moves through Abraham, Moses, and David, and ends with Jesus.

Mom Thoughts

This beautiful picture book has a clear goal and accomplishes it: to show children that Christ is the True King who rescued His people from sin and will one day establish His never-ending kingdom on earth as well. This is a bit of a longer picture book with a fair amount of text on most pages, but for those children with the attention spans, it clearly shows people’s desperate need for their True King.

The text returns to the idea that there are two kingdoms at war: the kingdom of the Great King and the kingdom of the evil serpent. While this is true, one phrase might need to be clarified. It reads, “Ever since then, two opposing forces have been at war in the world: the kingdom of the Great King and the kingdom of the evil serpent.”

While the phrase “Two opposing forces” doesn’t state they are equal, it could be easily misconstrued. God is Lord, even of the devil, and Satan is bound by the parameters set by God.

Overall, this is a really lovely book to show children that scripture is one continuous story of God’s plan of redemption and that Christ is the True King for which we are longing.
