Mom Thoughts
This middle-grade novel features a highly original premise, blending futuristic gadgets with ancient curses, all set primarily in the year 1789. Packed with unexpected twists and turns, it’s sure to captivate young readers. While the author is skilled at keeping the action moving, there are a few times where the writing feels a bit clunky, but not so much to distract heavily from the excitement. As a British author, there are a few words that to an American child might seem unnatural. While this isn’t overtly Christian, it is published by a Christian publishing house and has Christian allusion interwoven. There is a silver bird, Thyripolis, who Beth sees protecting them on their journey. Joe thinks it’s in Beth’s mind, but by the end his stance changes.
While the author did a wonderful job building to the climax, the high point itself seemed a bit rushed. If you are uncomfortable with magical elements, this probably isn’t a good fit for you, but besides the curse itself, the magical elements don’t give off “witchcraft” vibes- simply a fantasy novel with imaginative bounds of reality. Overall, if historical fantasy is up your child’s alley, this is an exciting and fun read!
