Summary
This picture book is a creative retelling of the story of The Prodigal Son, mixed with elements from The Pilgrim’s Progress.
Mom Thoughts
A creative retelling means the author has taken the original story and added their own elements. While this story does not claim to be Scripture, it does generally stick to the story, but expands on them: giving the two sons names, adding in more dialogue, naming different towns he encounters, and more.
The same elements are also inspired by The Pilgrim’s Progress as they turn the parable more allegorical: the boys’ names are Wander and Goodness, and the towns Wander comes to are Perfection, Popularity, and Desperation. Between the beautiful storytelling, the Biblical focus, and the stunning illustrations, I was honored to endorse this title.
“The Long Road Home beautifully retells the parable of the prodigal son with vivid illustrations and an added dash that harkens to The Pilgrim’s Progress. Adults and children alike will be drawn into Wander’s story as the biblical truths resonate in their hearts. It’s biblical and beautiful—my favorite combination.”
