Summary

The Little House tells the story of a home throughout the years. First, the Little House is in the country and brand new. The house stays in the family for generations, but as time goes by and the cities around it grow, the house finds itself longing for the bright lights it sees far off in the distance and a faster pace than what she is experiencing in the country. We see how the scenery and land around the house grows and how the city gets closer and closer with each passing year. Finally, the Little House is right smack dab in the middle of the Big City, underneath some trolly tracks and all. The Big City isn’t quite what the Little House thought it would be and she finds herself wishing she was in the country again. Then one day a woman walks by and notices the house looks like the one her grandmother grew up in and finds out it is the very one. She buys the house, moves it back out into the country, restores it, and she and her family move in. Once again the Little House finds herself cared for in the country and she never again wonders about the Big City.

Mom Thoughts

If I didn’t already want to live out in the country with a lot of land, this book sure would do the trick. Virginia Lee Burton was a well-known author and illustrator and this book really shows you why. Her illustrations and the way the words flow truly move you and make you feel. My daughters and I all love this book and reach for it again and again. It teaches that the grass isn’t always greener and that a slow-paced life can be fulfilling and beautiful! I recommend this book wholeheartedly!
