Summary
A young boy is afraid of the dark, so his Grandfather tells him a story to help him. Once upon a time, there was a King of Light who made a group of people to shine brightly, like him. He called them “Lightlings.” One day the Lightlings disobeyed the king and out of fear ran to the forest where their lights grew dim. They were then afraid of the light of the king.
After some time, there came a very bright light in the distance. Many lightlings were afraid of the light, but others went to see where the light was coming from. They saw that the light was coming from a baby. They were told the baby was the king’s son and was a gift to them. When he grew up, he would be the Light of the World.
The lightlings who saw the baby shone brighter than before and went back to the forest to tell the others. Some still hid from the light, but others understood they didn’t need to be afraid anymore.
The Grandfather finished the story by telling his grandson that we are afraid of the dark because we were never meant to live in it. If he remembers that the King of Light gave us his son as a present, then he wouldn’t have to be afraid.
Mom Thoughts
This beautifully illustrated picture book is a very clear and understandable allegory of creation, the fall, and redemption through Christ. It can also be a helpful story for children who have a fear of the dark. Sproul’s children’s books are a bit lengthier, but if your child’s attention span can make it about 10 minutes, it is a lovely bedtime read. It is simple but dripping with Biblical truth and I highly recommend it for your family!
