Summary

Tag the owl, Skyla the squirrel, and Blaze the last Firehawk embark on a journey to save all of Perodia from the evil vulture, Thorne. They must find all the missing pieces to the Ember Stone and then use it to defeat Thorne’s magic. Along the way, they meet many interesting animals and grow in bravery and friendship. After releasing Thorne’s spies from their trances, Throne is banished from Perodia, but promises to be back. He also tells Blaze she isn’t the last Firehawk. Tag, Skyla, and Blaze go searching for the other Firehawks and do eventually find Blaze’s family and mother.

Reading Level: 2nd grade (Although my librarian said they are very popular with kids 9-12!)

Mom Thoughts

This series is Lord of the Rings meets woodland animals. If you are uncomfortable with magic themes, this is not the series for you. Magic is used for both good and bad with dark magic controlling animals to be Thorne’s slaves and changing the weather. Good magic is used only by some to fight evil, to see the future, to heal, to give special powers, and more. Many of the magic themes are also similar to those in Lord of the Rings including a stone that possesses great power.

Filled with battles of good versus evil and exciting quests, this is sure to interest the adventure-loving child.  While there is much magic in the story, this is really a series about friendship and fighting for good. There are no language concerns. The reading level is 2nd-3rd grade, but children as old as 5th grade can enjoy this series.

Questionable Behaviors: In the first book, I don’t love how Tag is told not to go somewhere because it’s dangerous and he does the exact opposite to show his bravery. I know these are common themes in war and quest novels, but they never resolve this or talk about what true bravery looks like.
