Summary
A young boy questions if he can really trust the Bible, and so his grandpa answers him with a story.
There was once a knight without a king. He had heard stories about the Great King. Then, one day the knight, Sir Charles, received a letter from the Great King, telling him to follow the map included with the letter and it would lead him to the Pearl of Great Price. Along the way, Sir Charles encounters several people that confuse him or give him bad advice: Mr. Skeptic, the idol maker, and Mr. Liberal. Then he meets Mr. Pilgrim who tells him he knows someone who can help the knight understand the map: The Lamp Maker.
The Lamp Maker tells the knight that he drew the map; the problem is that Sir Charles has to trust the Great King and the map he sent. The Lamp Maker then tells him that after the people’s disobedience to the king, the prince traveled a difficult road to obey his father to rescue the people from suffering. Now that Sir Charles understood that the map indeed was written by the Great King, it was easy to read and the path was clear.
Following the map, Sir Charles reaches the mountain top to find a man. When he asks him who he is, the man reveals that he is both the Prince and the Pearl of Great Price. The Price then lead the knight to his kingdom where he lived joyfully with the prince and the Great King.
Mom Thoughts
This beautifully illustrated picture book is a very clear and understandable allegory that the Bible is God’s Word that Christians must trust and follow. Sproul’s children’s books are a bit lengthier, but if your child’s attention span can make it about 10 minutes, it is a lovely read. This particular title definitely has some similarities to Pilgrim’s Progress, but with a more specific message centering around the authority of scripture. I highly recommend it for your family!
