Mom Thoughts
The Westminster Shorter Catechism has been used by Christians for almost 400 years as a summary and teaching tool of Christian doctrine. This new edition was made specifically with families in mind, to help children learn and memorize this valuable piece of history, but in language they can more easily understand.
If you are unfamiliar with the Westminster Shorter Catechism, it is organized in a question-and-answer format, with each question numbered for easy reference. The most well-known question/answer is the first: Q: What is man’s foremost purpose in life? A: Man’s foremost purpose in life is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever. This modern adaptation reads: Q: What is man’s primary purpose? A: Man’s primary purpose is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.
Also, if you are unfamiliar, the WSC takes a firm stand on the Sabbath as well as Baptism. Concerning the Sabbath, “From the beginning of the world to the resurrection of Christ, God appointed the seventh day of the week to be the weekly Sabbath. From then to the end of the world the first day of the week is the Christian Sabbath.” (original text)
Concerning baptism, “Baptism is not for anyone outside of the visible Church until they profess their faith in Christ and obedience to Him. Yet infant children of members of the visible Church are to be baptized.” (original text) If you want to read the original WSC in its entirety, click HERE.
The illustrations are simple and more cartoon-like than what usually accompanies this work, which some people may prefer and others may not. There are no depictions of Christ in the illustrations. Overall, this is very well done and could be a fantastic tool for your family.
