The God Contest by Carl Laferton

This is a retelling of 1 Kings 18: 16-40 as well as parts of the gospels. Ahab and Jezebel were king and queen of Israel and believed Baal was the true god. Elijah knew the one true God is Yahweh. Most people in Israel didn’t know what to believe. Elijah invited them to have a contest to see who was the real God by sending fire down from heaven to burn up an altar on top of a mountain. Team Baal shouted and danced for hours but nothing happened. Elijah prayed to God and He sent fire down from heaven that burned up everything! Unfortunately, a short time later most people forgot about what God did and didn’t follow Him.

Then Yahweh sent Jesus. Jesus said he was Yahweh, but many weren’t sure. Jesus said he would come back to life after he had died and everyone who believes in Him will have life forever! And that’s just what Jesus did. Now lots of people have joined Team Jesus. Will you?

In another gem for your home library, Carl Laferton retells the story of Mount Carmel, connecting it to the gospel in such a natural, but striking way. I didn’t see the “twist” at the end coming of using this story to point to Jesus, but it is so beautiful and dripping with truth. I highly recommend this book for your family!
