Mom Thoughts

This graphic novel series is filled with adventure and humor on every page. We meet interesting characters and root for them along the way. This tale filled with knights, dragons, hidden enemies, and curses, might appeal more to boys, but there is certainly plenty of adventure for girls to enjoy here as well. The illustrations feel like a nostalgic comic strip, and I am a huge fan of the illustrator’s style. There is a small amount of magic (we assume) with one character being under a curse of not being able to sleep, but this storyline hasn’t been resolved in the first two books.

My major issue is that there is a fair amount of crass language (listed below) throughout. Overall, this is a fun, action-packed series that I wish had fewer coarse words.

Language:

Shut up, stupid, heck, and jerk are used, some many times.

One character is mockingly called portly.

There are a few times that a character’s words are symbols to imply they are swearing.

Violence:

There is some cartoon style violence, like a woman smacking her husband on the head with a spoon.

Some men punch each other.

One of the boys is whipped.

Sexual Content:

One of the boys imagines he is going to kiss the princess.
