Summary

Sophie Mouse is an eight-year-old mouse who lives in Silverlake Village with her family and other animal friends. Her father is an architect, her mother owns the bakery in town, and her little brother is six. Her best friend Hattie is a frog and together with their new snake friend, Owen, they enjoy and live life together, learning lessons along the way.

Some of their adventures include exploring a new part of the forest to find rare berries, learning special things about each species, building a special fort at Butterfly Brook, and preparing Sophie’s mother’s bakery stand for the fall festival.

(I have only read the first seven books in the series. There are currently 18.)

Mom Thoughts

This series is so sweet, mild, and adorable- I just want to jump into the story! These are not page-turning, edge-of-your-seat books, but what they lack in suspense they make up for in character and charm. There are many illustrations throughout the books, so this makes an excellent choice for a newly independent reader. These will likely appeal more to girls, but boys could certainly enjoy them as well. I highly recommend this lovely series for your family!

Questionable Behaviors: In the second book, Sophie leaves for the day to go to a part of the wood that is thought to be dangerous, and she doesn’t disclose to her parents where she is going, just that she’ll be gone. Also, while in the woods, Sophie becomes lost and accepts help from and goes inside a stranger’s house. This sounds a bit more ominous than it reads, but definitely still worth addressing with your child.

Also, in book number seven, The Clover Curse, Sophie thinks she is under a curse, but at the end of the book that’s proven incorrect.
