Summary

This is a bit of a hybrid between a picture book and a devotional, which is why I’ve included it in both categories. This book has 25 stories to show why Jesus came at Christmas. The first 23 stories are Old Testament with the final two from the New Testament. There is a Bible verse at the beginning of each story and there is a question or two at the end.

Mom Thoughts

Although this isn’t exactly a devotional, if you were to have this in your home, you would probably treat it like one. Because there are 25 stories, you can assume one story is meant to be read each day leading up to Christmas. This could work well for families with younger children since the stories themselves are brief, there is a full-page illustration for each, and there is a simple question to answer after reading. This is a good reminder for our children how the entire Bible is one story.

There is one spot on the very last day that talks about Mary and Joseph staying at their extended family’s house in Bethlehem and sharing the space with their hosts and their animals since there was no space in the guest room. While it may sound odd to our ears, this is likely a more probable situation than Jesus being born in a stable (which is never actually said in Scripture).
