Summary

This unique storybook Bible reads like a comic book. It is split into sections with each section holding multiple Bible stories. The sections include: Creation, Father of the Faith, The Life of Joseph, Moses, Joshua, God’s Judges, The Kings, The Prophets, The Exiles, Jesus’ Birth and Ministry, Jesus’ Final Days, The Church is Born, and Words to the Church.

Mom Thoughts

If you have a reader at home that enjoys superhero-style graphic novels, this is the story Bible for them! Put together like a giant comic book, this book brings stories to life in an exciting way. So much so, in fact, that this won an ECPA Medallion of Excellence.

Do be aware that many of the expertly drawn illustrations are a bit graphic, for example, the plague of boils, the story of Job, Naaman’s leprosy, and the crucifixion, to name a few. There is also an outline of Ahithophel hanging himself. There is a depiction of Salome, Herod’s step-daughter/niece, while she is dancing to please Herod and his guests that reveals her navel. I wish this illustration wasn’t in the book at all, as it’s unnecessary and unhelpful. Also, note that the very brief pages covering Revelation depict Satan as a large, red, dragon with six heads. As with any story Bible, this should be a supplement to reading actual scripture, not a replacement for it, because as with all story Bibles, there is much missing as well as some liberties taken.

There is now an updated version that actually softens a few lines. For example in the original version, the men in Sodom- when speaking of the angels Lot takes into his home- say, “Let’s rob them and have our way with them.” In the updated version it reads, “Let’s rob them and teach them a lesson.”

This certainly isn’t a book for everyone, especially not sensitive children, but for the right child (usually an older boy), this story Bible can become a fast favorite.
