Summary

These unique picture/resource books are written to be read like a rap with 26 short verses that make their way through the alphabet while teaching the attributes of God and Jesus. Every page has an attribute at the top, followed by a short, rhyming verse, and corresponding Bible verses. There is also a full-page illustration for every letter.

Best suited for children ages 5-11.

Mom Thoughts

The subtitle of this book is “A Rhyming Theology (or Christology) for Kids,” and it lives up to its name. When I first read this to my children, I didn’t realize it was meant to be a rap and it still read just fine, but it would definitely put a different spin on things to rap the entire book. There is actually a QR code at the back of the books you can scan to listen to the entire book as a rap.

The theology itself is rock solid and the author doesn’t shy away from hard subjects, for example, “Immortal means God cannot die or ever perish; God is life itself- he’s the treasure we should cherish. The immortal God became a man-Immanuel!-To die and rise for us, so we wouldn’t land in hell.” The text also uses some fairly challenging vocabulary for the 5-11-year-old range, but I absolutely appreciate that they are not “dumbing things down” just because it’s a kid’s book. It does definitely lean Reformed in its theology, which I adamantly support. For example, the third book covers election and states, “God chose us before he made the universe, But his choice was not based on who is best or who is worse. Without election, Jesus we would never receive; If he didn’t choose us, then we would never believe.”

To read these entire books straight through with all of the scripture included might be a bit more than some kids can handle, but I’m sure some children will also greatly enjoy it. You could certainly break this up for younger children and add individual letters to their memory work or have older children try and actually rap it themselves. This is a unique book that I am not exactly sure of how to take full advantage, but I can tell you that I really like it and think it’s a solid resource for your family, Sunday School, or other children in your life.
