Summary

This large hardcover book has one poem for each day of the year, including one for February 29th. Some poems are very brief, only a few words, and some are longer, a few paragraphs. None will take you more than three minutes to read. Each page is also fully illustrated to reflect the poem(s) on that page. There are some very well-known poets such as E. E. Cummings, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, William Shakespeare, and Sara Teasdale as well as many with which you will likely be unfamiliar.

Mom Thoughts

If you are looking for a fun, easy, and beautiful way to incorporate a little more poetry into your child(ren)’s day, look no further! This is a gorgeously illustrated, thoughtfully put-together collection that both you and your child(ren) will look forward to reading each day. While this isn’t a faith-based book, there are a few poems that mention God or angels. Because this book focuses on poems about nature, the earth or nature is sometimes referred to with the feminine “she” or “her” pronoun.

A few things to know: The poem on October 31st is called “The Bat” and ends with this stanza: “For something is amiss or out of place When mice with wings can wear a human face.” There is another poem called “Weather or Not” which is a little odd. It says the weather that was supposed to come tomorrow came today and so on the “Last Day” it will be spooky because there will be no weather. The poem titled “Fog in November” describes a farmer preparing his fields for next year as “the ghost of a man spreads Dung on dead fields for next year’s crop.” The poem “That Stormy Night” says about lightening: “What you see up there is light that’s millions of years away you know that, don’t you?” There is also an Apache song titled, “The Four Corners of the Universe” which reads, “For you are the mother of a people.”

While there may be a few poems that you skip, replace, or have conversations after, I feel this is still a wonderful book to have in your home collection that will encourage your child(ren) in their learning and love of poetry.
