Saint Valentine by Ann Tompert

This is a retelling of the life of Saint Valentine, acknowledging that most of the information is not verified, but tradition.

The reason I chose this book above others for the life of Saint Valentine is that this book actually acknowledges that most of what we are told about him is legend and not verified truth. It does a great job of compiling the different stories told about him into one succinct narrative. The way people are illustrated is a bit odd- very round, almost doll-like features- but the text itself is very responsibly written. This is out of print, so check the library and used book sellers for this one!
