Summary
Hedgehog lives on a small island with her (stuffed) friend, Mutty. One night a storm carries Mutty off of the island, so the next day, Hedgehog goes to find her friend. She swims across the river to the forest and begins her search. Along the way, she meets many new friends including Mole, Owl, Beaver, Hens and her chicks, and finally a little girl, Annika Mae Flores.
Annika Mae has found Mutty and to return the favor, Hedgehog wants to find Annika’s notebook of memories. While in pursuit of the notebook, Beaver’s dam collapses, and Hedgehog and the notebook are thrown downstream. Annika Mae scoops up Hedgehog and Owl grabs the notebook. Although the notebook is mostly ruined, Annika Mae is happy to have found such wonderful friends with whom she can make new memories.

Mom Thoughts
This brief chapter book is beautifully written and swimming in endearing illustrations at every turn. It reminds me a bit of the Winnie-the-Pooh characters in their quirks, but also their love and support of each other. The text never says that Mutty is stuffed, but I assume it is to be implied by the illustrations. The chapters are very short, which will encourage young readers. Although it appears to be for younger children, some of the vocabulary may prove difficult for especially new readers. This is a lovely choice for your family!
