NNorma and Belly are hungry squirrels whose love of people food often gets them into sticky situations. These early reader graphic novels have between five and eight chapters per book.

Ages: 5-8

Mom Thoughts

Norma and Belly are lighthearted, humorous, and perfectly suited for newly independent readers. Each book focuses on one people food that Norma and Belly are trying to acquire and the trouble they get into along the way. What some parents might have reservations about it that, although they are squirrels acting like squirrels, because they are anthropomorphized, they are technically stealing. While it’s meant to be silly, funny, and following thinking of squirrels, some may feel that it’s condoning this for children. I do not believe this was the intent. Also, one of the books is about fortune cookies and the squirrels’ plan is to write fortunes that tell the people to give their cookies to the squirrels. Again, it’s simply meant to be humorous.
