Mom Thoughts
This picture book paints a vivid picture of Harriet Tubman’s journey to freedom. With rich, life-like illustrations, we catch of glimpse of her travels and trials. I love that this book doesn’t shy away from Tubman’s spiritual life. She is constantly talking with and trusting in God. Many books gloss over this, instead of embracing it like this book. It is clear that God is the champion of this story.
The only thing that gives me a bit of pause is when they give words to God. Obviously, Harriet Tubman had great faith in God and tried to follow His leading. However, sometimes it reads like she heard an audible voice or that these were God’s actual words. Giving extra-biblical words to God makes me uncomfortable, but this book could be used as a good discussion starter.
