Summary
Mom Thoughts
This graphic novel has very few words and is almost exclusively illustration driven. The overall story is a sweet one of friendship and loyalty. If you have a younger child who loves robots and doesn’t mind slightly intense illustrations, this will likely be a winner. The part that I was disappointed in was the ending. Other children discover the little girl and her robot friends and instead of being excited for more friends, the little girl feels replaced and so the little robot takes her for a walk. I understand the goal was to show loyalty, but having the little girl essentially choose a robot over other children wasn’t the ending for which I was hoping. I don’t love the trend I am seeing in books and other media where robots and AI are treated as real people and friends.
If we take this as just a simple story, it’s exciting and sweet, but having a conversation about robots (and thus the electronic/AI devices we have at home) and how they are not people and not created in the image of God might prove to be wise.
Questionable Behaviors: The little girl seems to sneak out of her house in the morning.
The girl locks the little robot in a cage against his will.
The little girl is never seen with an adult and is often alone.
