Summary
This picture book follows a family with a young boy who has a disability for a typical day. We hear the day narrated by his older brother. We are told the young boy’s disability includes speech and walking delays. The day includes going to therapy, having lunch at a cafe, going sledding, playing with friends, and spending time with family.
Mom Thoughts
Whether or not you have someone in your life with a disability, this book is a fantastic resource for your family. It is, thankfully, void of cutesy words that might make disability confusing, but instead has a wonderfully honest and encouraging tone. The heart behind this book is mirrored in the subtitle, “A Story About Disability and Discovering God’s Image in Every Person.”
A couple of quotes that set that capture the tone of the book well:
“I don’t always understand what the kids [at therapy] are saying or why they act the way they do. Mom says it’s because God made everyone unique. We all give him glory in different ways, and if we look closely, we can learn a little bit about God through each of them. ‘It’s a privilege to know another human being, no matter what they look like to how they act. Don’t ever forget that, kiddo,’ Mom says.”
“God made you, God loves you, God is kind to you.”
This book is a great conversation starter and was adored instantly by all three of my children. The illustrations are lovely and warm. It is a beautiful reminder that no matter what a person looks like or their ability, they are still made in the image of God, and thus deserve the love, care, and respect as any other image bearer.
