Mom Thoughts

There are very few graphic novels I genuinely enjoy, and this is one of them. The watercolor-esqe illustrations are artistic and beautiful. The story is obviously unrealistic in nature, but I love that it’s set completely in reality. So many graphic novels are sci-fi or fantasy themed and it’s refreshing to see one where nature and relationships are the central focus.

When Kodi finally makes it to Seattle, he is found by an injured fishing sailor. By the end of the book, Katya, Meema, Kodi, and Joshua (the sailor) are a sweet band of misfits. Some could argue that this is trying to redefine a family, but I believe that to be a remarkable stretch. They are simply unlikely friends who bond over a sweet Kodiac Bear.

Questionable Behaviors: Katya endures being made fun of at school because of her drawings of Kodi.

Katya sneaks into an empty teacher’s lounge to eat her lunch in peace.
