Summary

This picture book tells the story of King David with a specific goal: showing children how David’s life points to Christ. The first page reads, “Did you know that the oldest stories in the Bible are a bit like puzzles? If you look carefully, you can spot some ‘Jesus moments.’ These are moments when someone in the story is a little bit like Jesus. So this book is the exciting true story of how a young shepherd called David became a king. But what makes it even more exciting is that it’s also about Jesus, the King of all Kings.” There are crowns hidden on the pages where David is doing something that points to Christ.

Mom Thoughts

I love the premise of this series: show children how Old Testament stories point to Christ. This is a birds-eye view of David’s life, so there are only a few events covered, which is to be expected in a picture book. The illustrations are a nice balance of soft-edged realism. They aren’t overly cartoony, which would make the story feel fictional, but rather softer and more appealing than stark realism.

This would be an excellent choice for a church, school, or home library as a unique introduction to David’s life- immediately drawing children’s attention to the fact that all of Scripture points to Christ.
