Summary

This is a very brief retelling of The Odyssey written in a rhyming poem. There are full spread illustrations on every page. There are also resource pages in the back of the book with a map of The Voyage of Odysseus, the cast of characters, and pages reflecting on virtues or vices displayed in the story with questions for the child to answer.

Mom Thoughts

This is a rather unique, but very creative take on a classic. In only 56 pages, the author has touched on many of the notable points from the original. Obviously, in such a short book there is much missing, but the big picture story of Odysseus’s voyage and misfortunes is there with a few of the exciting details as well. The author also removes all of the adult content to make this version totally appropriate for children 8-12 years old. There are a few illustrations depicting battles, monsters, and some of the perils on the journey, so be aware if you have a very sensitive child. I think most children, likely boys, will find the pictures- especially the ones just mentioned- pretty cool.

This is a wonderful way to introduce a major classic work to your child in an age-appropriate way. I think this would be a good first exposure to The Odyssey upon which you could easily build immediately after or later. The book itself is beautiful and hats off to the author for writing the entire thing in rhyme!
