Summary
When a new student joins Sunday School, Ms. Campbell and the class discuss how some people in God’s creation have special needs and how we are all made by God and should be treated as such. They touch on some specific disabilities like deafness, blindness, and using a wheelchair.
Mom Thoughts
This book, part of the God Made Me series, does a nice job of answering some questions that children may have about disabilities as well as showing children that those with disabilities in our churches are still an important and needed part of the Body of Christ. It uses 1 Corinthians 12:22-23 as the central Bible verse. It does use the term “special needs” which some are shying away from, but it does so in a way that addresses when they hear this phrase used- what does it mean?
There is a line that reads, “[Disabilities] are part of creation, there’s no need to be scared.” I know some would argue that disabilities are not part of creation, but the result of the fall, and shouldn’t be labeled as “God made me this way.” I think it’s clear that the author is pointing to God’s sovereignty as well as encouraging children not to be fearful of those who have a disability.
