Summary
On the way to a class trip to the zoo, Mateo tells Ruthie that he doesn’t like his big ears and Ruthie says she doesn’t like her red hair and freckles. Their teacher, Mrs. Chen, tells them that we reflect God in special ways like nothing else in creation and are worthy of honor and respect. At the zoo, the children take a ride around to see Africa’s five big animals and they learn lessons along the way like being different isn’t always bad, God’s designs are good, because of the fall there is now sin, disease, and death, life is beautiful even when it has hard things in it, and Jesus cares for those who are weak or suffering.
Mom Thoughts
This is a wonderfully crafted book that will help your child to understand that the way God made them is good. I love the way the authors give specific examples of physical features children may struggle with themselves, it makes this book very real and relatable. I also appreciate the way they address that being focused on ourselves will take the focus off of other more important things. Do be aware that it is a bit of a longer read, with a fair amount of text on each page, but all of the text is purposeful and well thought through. I recommend this for your family!
