Summary

Maya is very fast, faster than any of the boys at recess. Lucas tells her that if she keeps playing with boys, she will turn into a boy. Maya asks her teacher, Mr. Ramirez, if that is true. He says no and when they return to the classroom, he explains that gender is God’s good gift. We are made in God’s image and God made some of us to be boys and some to be girls. He explains that our DNA is different if we are a boy or a girl. It is not what we do or like or think that makes us a boy or a girl. Mr. Ramirez also gives a clear presentation of the gospel, and they talk about ways they can show others God’s love.

Mom Thoughts

This is one counter-cultural book. In a world where gender is now based on what you feel, this is a wonderful tool to teach children at a young age that their gender is not a mistake; it is a gift! This in no way teaches that we should condemn those who are confused about their gender, in fact, Machowski makes sure to address how we can show God’s love to others.

No matter how much you feel like you are sheltering your child from the lies the world teaches, it is important to cement this truth in your child’s heart and this book is a gentle and truth-filled story to help.
