Summary

This graphic novel/comic takes the story of Lazarus and the Rich Man and turns it into a real story that intertwines with the life of Christ. Lazarus is a beggar outside the Rich Man, Phineas’s, home. Lazarus meets and believes in Jesus. He dies an old, poor, beggar. Phineas is eventually poisoned by his own brothers as a much younger man. In eternity, Lazarus is taken to paradise before the new heaven and earth, but Phineas is taken to a place of fire and pain.

Lazarus watches first hand from Paradise Jesus die for his very own sins. He then meets Jesus in Paradise and watches him return to earth for a time. After much arguing with Abraham, Phineas realizes there is no hope for him to escape the eternity he has chosen. We also see a foreshadowing of Jesus’s return and triumph.

Mom Thoughts

This comic book is an incredibly exciting story with strikingly vivid illustrations. While the only language issue is the word “idiot,” this is still a book for older children. The amazing pictures can be very intense and graphic at times. The illustrator’s style is definitely in a traditional superhero comic style with extreme facial expressions and great detail. The story itself is expertly written by Randy Alcorn and is dripping in biblical truth and scriptural references.

While I was reading it, it definitely made me long for eternity. While much of it was like being in an action movie, there are a few fairly wordy sections. If your reader makes it past the first 10 pages or so, however, they will likely be hooked. This will probably appeal to boys more, but girls could certainly enjoy it also. It would be best for children 10 and up.
