Mom Thoughts
These sweet beginning chapter books are heavily illustrated with small amounts of text on each page. Although these are aimed at newly independent readers, there are some vocabulary words that might be challenging, depending on the child. For example, “Then she fastened snow skis to their feet and to their wagon for a speedy journey home. Naturally, Poppy loved it. Cornbread was surprised. He loved it too. It was quite an adventure.”
A few very small things: In the first book, there is a pig who is called “the town grump.” There is also a small instance in the carnival book where Poppy and Cornbread selfishly fight over a peanut. Although they do resolve things, neither actually apologizes, which is what I would have liked to see.
Overall, a cute and cozy read for your newly independent reader!
