Is God for Real? by Jeriah D. Shank and Teresa Hemmings

This apologetics book is written as a fictional story about two siblings who ask their parents questions. Each short chapter answers a different question:

1. Who is God?
2. What is the Trinity?
3. Does God Exist?
4. How Did We Get the Bible?
5. Did God Really Create Everything?
6. Did Jesus Rise from the Dead?
7. Why Does God let Bad Things Happen?
8. How Can I Be Saved?
9. Why Don’t My Friends Believe

Read Aloud Age: 5+

This resource/chapter book is unique in its structure, but its heart is clear: answering questions children have about God and His Word. This is a solid, basic introduction to these subjects, sticking to orthodoxy throughout. Many of the explanations are simple but helpful, and children will likely grasp the main thoughts of each chapter. The fiction element is not the strong point of the text, although the intent is admirable.

I appreciate how when speaking of the Trinity, it is pointed out that no illustration is sufficient. There is also a clear gospel presentation in chapter eight. Do be aware that in that same chapter, they have a girl recite John 3:16 while inserting her name. There is a line in the last chapter of which I am not a fan of the wording.

“Because I asked [Christ] to be my Savior, I belong to God now.”

Perhaps the author leans toward Arminianism or maybe the wording was lazy, but it is not because of anything we do that we are in Christ.

Otherwise, I found this to be a very helpful resource for families and recommend it.
