The Fallacy Detective by Nathaniel Bluedorn & Hans Bluedorn

This workbook is a 4th edition of the original book. It covers the common errors of reasoning as found in informal logical fallacies. These are typically labeled as “bad reasoning”. It is set up in short 1-3 page lessons, defining each Logical Fallacy. It then provides exercises (multiple choice questions) to help you understand examples and situations where you might encounter the lesson. It is self-directed and easy to read with clear definitions. Cartoons from Dilbert, Calvin & Hobbes, Peanuts, and their own illustrator provide humor and helpful characterizations. There are instructions for a game to play with others who have learned about these fallacies as well as a Glossary of Terms, and an Answer Key in the back.

I’ve heard so much about this book and it did not disappoint! It is clearly from a Christian worldview and it references homeschooling in a positive light. There are some Biblical references and faith is put forth as a logical conclusion, where astrology and new age thoughts are categorized as faulty logic. I do agree with the age recommendations if only that there are many historical and cultural references that younger children just won’t understand. The humor is also an enjoyable part of this book and might be missed by a younger audience. I like how short the lessons are, and the exercises immediately following are helpful. I do wish that the answers were explained as to why the answer might be different than you thought. The answer key generally provides no explanation or instruction. If you are doing this in a class setting, I do think everyone would need a copy of the book.

Language/Behaviors:
stupid, mentions the topics of capital punishment, astrology, and murder as examples in the lessons.

Other Things to Know:
They do mention redheaded tempers quite a few times, so fellow redheads, be warned! ;)
