Mom Thoughts
This chapter books series is perfect newly independent readers, especially girls. In fact, this is possibly the “girliest” book series I’ve read! Tea parties, sewing, crafting, and baking are celebrated throughout this completely adorable series. Newbery Medalist Cynthia Rylant creates a picturesque year for a nine-year-old girl. The characters are endearing, the storyline is charming–this is about as sweet and mild as they come. While some of the language may feel a bit dated, it’s lovely.
These books are best read in order, as there is a lovely overarching storyline. Part of that storyline is the girls playing matchmaker with their aunt and a young man, Michael. The girls do a bit of dreaming about how romantic it is, but it’s always incredibly innocent. There one time where Michael kisses Aunt Lucy on the cheek.
Things to Know:
There are two jokes about animals becoming something else in their “next life.”
A parent makes a joke about having to take their kids back from Aunt Lucy.
There is a priest name Father Frank.
An angel statue is depicted.
