Summary

This is a 25-day Advent devotional. Author Kevin DeYoung has written them new for this book (as opposed to excerpts from his other titles) with each day having an illustration and Bible verse hidden beneath a lift-the-flap. As with many of his other children’s titles, it begins in Genesis and works its way through the Redemption Story, but not always in chronological order. Sometimes you can see portions of different stories from the Bible, and other times the days cover larger theological ideas pertaining to the Incarnation. There is also a very brief prayer at the end of each day.

Target Age: 6-12

Mom Thoughts

If you are a Kevin DeYoung fan, you will not be disappointed in this Advent resource. While the daily readings are short, DeYoung doesn’t shy away from many theological concepts, but because of their brevity, it doesn’t feel overwhelming.

“It’s not enough that God would send someone into the world to suffer for the sins of his people. Anyone can suffer-good or bad. And sometimes really good people are willing to suffer for others, even for bad people. Being a suffering servant would do little good if that servant wasn’t also a perfect servant. We need the Lord to be an offering for sin and our obedience.

What I love most about this is its clear centrality of the Gospel. When you finish this on Christmas, your children will have heard the reality of their sinful state, a big picture version of the Story of Redemption, the amazement of the Incarnation, and the hope of the Gospel. A great choice for families!
