Summary
Lucy, a recently orphaned girl, is relocated to live with the Martin family on a lighthouse island on Lake Superior. Though, this lighthouse is closely located to where the Elva Jane, a ship which sank when her father was young, went down. But the Elva Jane had a special object on that ship, a ruby necklace. Lucy grapples with her grief of losing her father as she adjusts to her new home, whilst she searches determinedly for the ruby necklace.

Mom Thoughts
This story touches on grief in a whimsical fashion, as we follow Lucy adjusting to her new life after being orphaned. Lucy is full of imagination, often taking several characters in her persona and interactions, such as princesses, fairies, heiresses and more. The story has beautiful descriptions, ones that would enchant young female readers. The character development is quite wholesome, and the story resolves quite happily. I would gladly let my child read this novel.
Questionable Behaviors:
disobeying parents, disregarded siblings urging her to get home in time, white lies, mild bullying
Other Things to Know:
depicts shipwrecks, dangerous ocean scenes and death
