Summary
Based on a Pennsylvania tall tale, this short book follows a young boy as he journeys over a hill on an errand for his mother. He is told there are no bears on the mountain and nothing to be afraid of, but to be home by dark. Through many mishaps he is put behind schedule and is on the mountain in the dark. He is forced to hide from the bears he was told did not exist. He is rescued by his father and welcomed home with his newfound knowledge and a task well done.

Mom Thoughts
This is a sweet story and a perfect read aloud. It has good role models in the mother, father and the extended family. The uncle teaches the boy about respecting animals and the father is well known. The boy Jonathan is kind, obedient and brave. It is harder and harder to find good quality boyhood books and this one hits the right mark. It is also fun for all kids because they get to prove the adults wrong that there are in fact bears on the mountain! The simple illustrations add context to the old fashion descriptions.
Other things to know:
A baby christening is mentioned without being explained.
