Sidekicks by Dan Santat

Aging superhero, Captain Amazing, doesn’t realize that his pets have become crime fighting heroes as well. When Captain Amazing’s sidekick auditions go wrong, who will be able to save the day?

Action. Good vs. Evil. Pets. Just what every good graphic novel needs. Seriously though, this is a fun superhero story with twist, one that I think many kids will enjoy. The characters are endearing and there is a strong emphasis on teamwork and bravery. The author lets us know a bit of the animals’ backstories, helping us to understand their dynamics even more. Repentance and forgiveness are even modeled. While not without fault, this is a pretty good choice as far as secular graphic novels go!

Language:

“Oh my gosh” is said several times.
“Stupid” and “shut up” are both said once.
Responding to affection, on character says, “I just threw up in my mouth.”
