Summary
As the title states, this is a graphic novel imaging of John Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion, Book 1: Chapters 1-5. It portrays Calvin communicating the information to two children who ask questions and interject thoughts along the way. At the end of each chapter there is a summary as well as questions for discussion and meditation.
Mom Thoughts
Calvin’s Institutes would not have been first in my mind to translate to graphic novel form, but it’s actually very effective to put visuals to some of Calvin’s thoughts. The text is obviously simplified and put into modern language, but the heart of each chapter stays the same. I am a Paul Cox fan, which is reaffirmed in his work here. His style is cartoon-esque with attention to detail and a dash of humor.
While this is likely aimed at children 8+, really anyone who wants a broad overview or a fun review of Calvin’s Institutes could benefit from this short, little book. I am looking forward to more in the series!
